About MatSoc
Here at MatSoc we offer a range of both Careers and Social events, which enable our members to grow and develop as materials scientists by making connections in other year groups, exposure to potential future employers, chance to network and build their experience for their futures.
Every year, a new committee will run the society, and offer their own range of opportunities, but here are some of our staples which you will see every year.
Welcome Drinks - October
Our start of year social, held in the Holder Building Cafe in the Department of Materials. It offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate to meet members of the department in their year and their own, as well as to meet the committee and sign up to the society. Snacks will be provided (and possibly pizza too) and it is a lovely way to start the new academic year.
This event is run in conjunction with JCCU and JCCG in Oxford Department of Materials.
Careers and Networking Event - November
Every year in Michaelmas Term, we host our annual careers and network event, bringing together representatives from our sponsor companies, Oxford MatSoc alumni, and other industry professionals to talk to our current members.
We begin the evening with short introductions from our industrial guests, so our members can learn who is there and who they wish to talk to. Then people are free to network and create connections. A brilliant opportunity to hear about the career paths of other materials scientists, learn about companies which are employing graduates, and meet employers who you may wish to apply to in the future.
Christmas Dinner - December
End the year with a celebratory meal with the MatSoc Community. Previous years' locations have included Browns, and Oranges and Lemons. Always a wonderful opportunity to relax and unwind, as well as building connections with members of other year groups, to help for the future.
